Formula Information

Atropine Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution is a sterile compounded liquid prepared for ophthalmic use and dispensed in an eye dropper bottle. It is available in concentrations of 0.01%, 0.02%, and 0.05% to accommodate individual prescription requirements.

Atropine may be prescribed by an eye care provider for certain ophthalmic uses, including pupil dilation and conditions such as uveitis, iritis, cycloplegia, or mydriasis. The appropriate concentration and directions for use are determined by the prescriber based on the patient’s specific needs.

This compounded medication is available by prescription only and should be used exactly as directed by a qualified healthcare provider.

Side Effects/Drug Interactions

Atropine may cause temporary blurred vision, dry eyes, or increased sensitivity to light. Patients should use the medication exactly as prescribed and contact their healthcare provider with any questions or concerns. Because atropine may interact with other medications, patients should provide their prescriber with a complete list of all prescription medications, over-the-counter products, and supplements they are taking.

How does it work?

Atropine ophthalmic drops work by temporarily blocking the effects of acetylcholine in the eye, which relaxes certain eye muscles and can dilate the pupil. Depending on the prescribed concentration, atropine may be used for specific ophthalmic purposes, including pupil dilation, management of certain inflammatory eye conditions, or slowing the progression of myopia in some patients. The appropriate use and concentration should be determined by an eye care provider.
